Moving to the west coast hasn’t exactly provided me with the expansive musical experience that I was wishing for as I’m still a fairly broke kid fresh out of college and all that. But every now and then I get turned on to something awesome (and free).
Last month I volunteered for the Left Coast Live festival in San Jose where I first heard Anya. I was positioned at a far entrance to check for tickets and couldn’t see any of the stages but I could hear the closest one to me fairly well and at one point this girl caught my ear. It took me a minute to get over there to check it out as I had a post to cover but I made it just in time to see her last song. It was hella cool and I made a mental note to figure out who she was and check her stuff later on.
Of course by the time the festival was over that night I was completely exhausted and forgot about my mental note. Until now. An event invite came across my screen for the premier of Anya’s next video and I was instantly reminded about the whole LCL episode.
Anyway, check out this cool video of Anya performing Runnin’ for the KnockSteady crew down in L.A. below…
Rolling Stone Magazine was in Toronto to capture some real nice footage of J. Cole performing “God’s Gift” live. It’s got to be near impossible to watch this and not get excited for Cole World, right?
Watching this gave me a very similar feeling to the first time I heard Cole. Do you remember the first time you heard Cole? For me it was “Lights Please” and I probably played it 7 times in a row and told everyone I knew about it for the next month or so. I was instantly hooked. Okay, more like 27 times…
The other day, I was visiting one of my mates in his flat and we began talking about music and new DJs. One guy we talked about was Madeon, a 17 years old producer and DJ from France. He has been remixing for quite some time now, with his biggest remix being his remix of Deadmau5′s “Raise Your Weapon” (listen to it here). What amazed me the most about this young rising star was a Youtube video where Madeon uses Ableton live to store 39 samples to make a live mashup titled “Pop Culture.” The video is a little old but it really takes the idea of a mashup to a whole new level, so check it out if you haven’t already!

You can read the full tracklist of the songs used in the video after the jump.
This track… this track. I don’t even know what to say past, “I would have given anything to have been there.” The new track accompanies a recap video of Pretty Lights‘ wild performance at Bonnaroo this year, and PL’s stage set alone will most likely make you salivate. For now, we have this video, but with any luck, it will soon appear on PL’s website for free.
To all my friends that made the journey to this throwdown, I just started hating you a little bit more.

Holy s**t. This guy absolutely rips Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” to shreds on his guitar. This is EPIC. Some of his facial expressions are pretty epic as well. Haha.
Mashup artists, I have a task for you. Will you add Lady Gaga’s vocals to this bad boy and send them my way? I will post it. Guaranteed.

In what is some of the best news of the day, Mayer Hawthorne, will be releasing a Impressions EP composed of six cover songs tomorrow. The album will feature his versions of songs by Jon Brion, The Isley Brothers, and Chromeo. I wonder what Chromeo song he will be covering.. whatever one it is, I guarantee it will be amazing.
Another cool thing about the EP is that each song will have a unique story to go with it regarding why they were selected, how they were recorded, and how he discovered the original. For example, this particular track was recorded in one take in a tiny makeshift tent at a festival in Dour, Belgium with his band, The County. Mayer Hawthorne’s soulful retro style fits perfectly with lyrics and composition of Electric Light Orchestra’s “Mr. Blue Sky” and I am really looking forward to hearing the rest of the covers off the EP. I’m glad I don’t have to wait long.
I came across this yesterday as I headed out from work. This is quite possibly the most beautiful modern dance interpretation I have ever seen. The rendition blends the “cool” factor that modern dance (i.e. breakdancing) has mastered with the grace and wonder of the original Dying Swan which was choreographed in the early 1900′s.
Before this, I had never heard of Lil Buck, but now that I know who he is (and what he is capable of), I am sure I will again. The dance was put on as part of an event known as Art Strike, which is aimed at bringing the arts back to inner city schools; very cool stuff.

How did Mercy know that covering Smokey Robotic is sure-fire way to get featured here on RemixTheVideo? I’m kidding.. but still kind of serious.
In this video, Mercy performs a great acoustic cover of Smokey Robotic’s “Forever My Love”. I really enjoyed listening to her rendition of the song and if you are a fan of Smokey Robotic, I am sure you will too.

In case you missed it, here’s a recap of OFWGKTA‘s performance at the MTVU Woodie awards. Consistently on brand, the group put on an outrageous performance of “Yonkers” and “Sandwitches” which this video only partially captures because half of the lyrics are censored. Among the hilarity, you can spot an impersonating midget, a chicken of some sort, and I giant red fish (whom if you follow Tyler, The Creator on Twitter you know had his arm broken during rehearsal).
If there is one thing this video proves, it is that sensationalism works. I love OFWGKTA, but their live performance was somewhat of a let down; most likely because they were running all over the place which distorted their voices and flow. That’s not to say I don’t wish I was at this show, damnit.
One of my buddies tossed this my way earlier tonight. Unf***ingreal. EKLIPS is a French beatbox master. The hits on this video are like wildfire right now. A major high five goes to whoever comments below with an accurate list of the songs they hear in the video.
