As some of you may have heard, Abay Lattin aka Carnegie of Silver Medallion was killed in a car accident on September 11th. Unfortunately, a seventeen year old girl made the wrong decision to drink and drive and crashed her car into Abay’s car, ending his life and one other. I didn’t know Abay personally but ever since I was introduced to Silver Medallion through Chi Duly’s October’s Very Cold, they have become one of my favorite groups. I was excited to be able to witness them rise to stardom and write about it on my blog. They are one of the few artists that I would make an effort to get their newest release posted here the day of. It is a real shame that Silver Medallion as we know it is no longer. Luckily, there is still more Silver Medallion with Carnegie that is going to be released. Oren plans on finishing Silver Medallion’s sophomore LP and the first single off it will be eerily titled “24 Hours to Live”.
In tribute to Carnegie, I wanted to post the beginnings of Silver Medallion. Before The Last of the Pop Stars and before the Sex in the City mixtape, Silver Medallion released two mixtapes. The first of which was Androids Dream of Electric Sheep released back in 2008. The mixtape includes their hometown anthem “Scottsdale” that I posted last week. The second mixtape, The Revenge of Linda Lovelace, was released in 2009 and features songs that didn’t make the cut for Silver Medallion’s debut album The Last of the Pop Stars. Through these two mixtapes, you can see the progression of Silver Medallion as musical artists. The talent was there from the beginning but their music has become more polished and focused as they continued to make music these last few years. I am sure this will be a treat for the Silver Medallion fans who, like myself, were not familiar with Silver Medallion when they first began. Before we get to the mixtapes, I would like to highlight a track that I (and many others) feel fits the mood of this post. It is one of my favorite’s from Silver Medallion’s Sex in the City mixtape.
