As some of you may have heard, Abay Lattin aka Carnegie of Silver Medallion was killed in a car accident on September 11th. Unfortunately, a seventeen year old girl made the wrong decision to drink and drive and crashed her car into Abay’s car, ending his life and one other. I didn’t know Abay personally but ever since I was introduced to Silver Medallion through Chi Duly’s October’s Very Cold, they have become one of my favorite groups. I was excited to be able to witness them rise to stardom and write about it on my blog. They are one of the few artists that I would make an effort to get their newest release posted here the day of. It is a real shame that Silver Medallion as we know it is no longer. Luckily, there is still more Silver Medallion with Carnegie that is going to be released. Oren plans on finishing Silver Medallion’s sophomore LP and the first single off it will be eerily titled “24 Hours to Live”.

In tribute to Carnegie, I wanted to post the beginnings of Silver Medallion. Before The Last of the Pop Stars and before the Sex in the City mixtape, Silver Medallion released two mixtapes. The first of which was Androids Dream of Electric Sheep released back in 2008. The mixtape includes their hometown anthem “Scottsdale” that I posted last week. The second mixtape, The Revenge of Linda Lovelace, was released in 2009 and features songs that didn’t make the cut for Silver Medallion’s debut album The Last of the Pop Stars. Through these two mixtapes, you can see the progression of Silver Medallion as musical artists. The talent was there from the beginning but their music has become more polished and focused as they continued to make music these last few years. I am sure this will be a treat for the Silver Medallion fans who, like myself, were not familiar with Silver Medallion when they first began. Before we get to the mixtapes, I would like to highlight a track that I (and many others) feel fits the mood of this post. It is one of my favorite’s from Silver Medallion’s Sex in the City mixtape.

“Just wanna go, just wanna run, where there’s no hate, live on the sun, become one, one with the stars, become one, one with god.” – Carnegie

Below are my four favorite tracks from the mixtape excluding “All That I Ask Pt. 2″, which is one of my favorites but is also featured on their debut album The Last of the Pop Stars. I did not include it because I wanted to highlight the tracks people may have not heard.

Long Live Silver Medallion.

LUST produces that thrash disco that is sweaty, full throttle, and grabs you by the throat. He just recently released his first EP titled Night:1. It is four tracks that range from smoother tracks suitable for a poolside lounge to others that are lethal club bangers. This is definitely worth checking out and I am not saying this just because he is a fellow Boulderite. The tracks he produces are way sick. I think my favorite on this EP is “Last Day Of Summer”. Download this EP and be sure to check out his previous remixes on his Soundcloud and head over to his website for his social media links to stay up to date on his future releases.

Shwayze just recently released his highly anticipated first solo mixtape titled “Love Stoned” under his legal name Aaron Smith. I am not 100% sure on this but I think Shwayze now refers to songs with both Aaron Smith and Cisco Adler. The mixtape is real dope, although it is more pop than rap. I picked out my favorite songs besides the leaks we have already posted on RTV such as “Pretty Girl”, “Can’t Do It Alone” and “Play It On The Radio”. Those three songs are probably my favorites off the tape but these tracks are just as good. Check them out and head over to bandcamp to get this mixtape for free.

I know you all have been waiting for this! The recent signee to Warner Brother Records and Kansas rapper XV teamed up with DJ Ill Will & DJ Rockstar to drop his newest Mixtape Vizzy Zone. What sets this mixtape apart from many others is that this mixtape features all original production, so you might as well call this an album but maybe wait until the tagless version drops before you do so. The mixtape features the likes of Mike Posner, Talib Kweli, Bun B, Chiddy Bang, GLC, Colin Munroe, Killer Mike & Mac Miller, so you know you can’t go wrong. We finally get the original “Mirror’s Edge” on this as well with Mike Posner! Check out my four favorite tracks from the mixtape and be sure to download this. You can stream the whole thing in this post as well. Enjoy and have a good rest of the night.

If you been following Outasight on RemixTheVideo then you probably have already heard a couple leaks off Never Say Never including “Near The End” and “Dear Heartache”, both excellent cuts off the mixtape. The tape is the second collaborative mixtape between LRG and the innovative Warner Bros. recording artist, Outasight. Never Say Never contains 14 brand new tracks available for free and features fellow artists Freddie Gibbs, XV, and Avriel Epps. The project also includes production from frequent collaborators such as 6th Sense, Cook Classics, Sa-Ra, and Mike Cash. I have to say that there is not many musicians out there like him. He is half the time a rapper and half the time a soul pop singer of the Motown era, a winning combination in my books. Check out some of the highlights from the mixtape (excluding the ones previously featured) and be sure to download it! My favorite track is “She’s Leaving Home”.

Having posted the first leak off this EP, it is only right to give you the full thing. In this album, Metermaids remix 5 songs off of Sleigh Bells album Treats and add their rhymes to it. Check out a few highlights from the EP and be sure to download it. My favorite track off the album is “Let It Burn (Rill Rill Remix)”.

With their new single, “We Ztay Shynin’” (Treats Remix), Brooklyn natives Metermaids lace their brash lyrics over the ear splitting beats of Sleigh Bells’ “Treats.” The song is just one of five Sleigh Bells tracks on the new remix EP that can be downloaded from the band’s website now. The track blends the in-your-face and unapologetic style that both acts exude. MC’s Swell and Sentence strongly admire Sleigh Bells, stating, “We really dig Sleigh Bells and thought they’re music would be amazing to remix, which it is.” Although the group did say that they wanted to keep the project light-hearted the lyrical content does contain a few cleverly placed jabs. “It was also a subtle dig at a few institutions of the music world that we wanted to bully, but not in a real obvious way,” explains Sentence. The duo re-affirms their position as hip-hop’s “Bad News Bears” by delivering their lyrics with an outwardly nasty attitude, encouraging those who can’t handle the grind of the city to move out to Hackensack. The blaring guitar continuously looped throughout the song is a striking compliment to the rappers’ style, and although Alexi Krauss’ vocal styling is an angelic contrast to the song’s vibe it comes off as anything but polite. The gritty collaboration on the new remix EP should serve as a perfect selection for the ears while rolling through the city streets.

About Metermaids:

Hailing from New York City, Metermaids are Swell and Sentence, two emcees who met through the local underground hip-hop scene in 2006. After releasing their debut EP the same year, the duo toured with the likes of Brand Nubian, Atmosphere, Sage Francis, Fabulous, Lady Bug Mecca (Digable Planets), The Lox, and Camp Lo. After this extensive and impressive tour, the duo released their first full-length effort in 2008 entitled Nightlife, exemplifying their choice to create a new sound in crossover music, blending indie rock with hip-hop. The release was followed up with the EP Nightlife In Illinoise. Never resting, that EP was followed with their “Turn The Lights Out” video which quickly became an internet sensation. The follow-up, the critically acclaimed Smash Smash Bang EP earned the group immense industry support, and the interest of top hip-hop producers including 9th Wonder. The band’s music is available for free at the group’s official website.

Dru B Shinin recently released the prequel EP to his Dirty Money Painting LP due out this Fall. I really enjoyed his first single off the LP titled “The Promise”, which you can listen and download here. Dru B Shinin continues where he left off in this EP with more tracks that highlight his talent and his ear for melodic beats. Listen to some of the highlights from the EP and my favorite track titled “Summertime Rain” below.
