Sometimes, the best songs are not the newest songs. We all have at least one old song that we throw on constantly, even though it’s outdated. Often times, some of these songs are even songs that never went mainstream, but should have. Well, we have thousands of these songs, that’s why we do Throwback Thursdays. Once a week, we will bring you a glorious track that we just can’t shake off. Whether it be a year, five years, or ten years old, we’ll show you one dated song that will tickle your fancy.
In light of the riots in the UK, I thought I bring back the Throwback Thursdays with some classics from The Clash starting with the song “London’s Burning.” Too soon? Maybe. Either way, The Clash have always been a favorite of mine and this allows me to say a few things about the riots. Get your act together UK and take note of what this this Hackney women said. Ruining local businesses by looting them or setting them aflame is no way to make a statement. Try writing to politicians, voting in elections or even get involved in the political process yourself. Not saying that there aren’t problems to be mad about. I just believe there is a better way. Anyways, enjoy some music from the best punk band of all time (to Rolling Stone readers, that isn’t f**king Green Day).

Damn it. We forgot Throwback Thursdays again. Maybe I should make those posts in advance. Anyways, to make up for it, here is my favorite song by Cage off his Hell’s Winter album. The album is gold and stands the test of time even six years later. I recommend grabbing a copy for yourself.
Purchase: Cage - Shoot Frank Feat. Darryl Palumbo
Hey, look! It's Smokey!
I’m Next recently sat down with three fourths of Smokey Robotic to get a glimpse of who Smokey Robotic is. If you are unfamiliar with the group, this is a good interview to learn more about them. Also, if you are live in the New York City area, don’t miss their first show at the Matchless Bar in Brooklyn. You can find more information about the concert via the Facebook event for it here.

In this week’s installment of Throwback Thursdays, I have one of my favorite songs from High School, Hybrid H’s “2 Yutes” featuring 8th Wundah. This song is one those back in the day jams. Not sure how I stumbled upon it but I think I went and looked for more of 8th Wundah’s music after he did a collaboration with Apathy.

I have also included two more great underground hip hop cuts that deserve to get more notice. Josh Martinez’s “Uphill Climb” features a dope piano loop and a great chorus.

J-Zone’s “Greater Later” features a very unique instrumental that J-Zone and Devin The Dude each rap about all the things that are going wrong. Luckily, everything will be greater later. Enjoy.

Well, this is interesting.. Although the Warner Music Group CEO Lyon Cohen’s is critical of “the excesses of the industry,” which include “artificial barriers of distribution” and $19 dollars CDs, he is still adamant about the industry’s recent push towards pursuing 360 deals. When Forbes’ Zack O’Malley Greenburg asks him what he has to say to critics of the 360 deal, his response is “I don’t listen to critics.” Okay now..
There are still artificial barriers of distribution. Radio, TV, and magazines (otherwise known as “the old media”) are all still there but the internet has made them less important. Either way, it is extremely tough without some gimmick to go viral and get over a million views without a major label backing you. The 360 deal makes sense now that people aren’t buying records like they used to but be careful what you sign artists.. You don’t want to sign away your livelihood.

The goofy guys over at Colorado’s The Adventurous 500 recently had the chance to sit down with Zion I, The Grouch and Amp Live backstage at Boulder’s Fox Theater. In the video, Zion I, The Grouch and Amp Live speak about their current tour, what they do for non-profits, on why they include social issues in their lyrics, the inspiration for Zion I’s “Coastin” (watch the music video for this classic song here), and their advice to aspiring musicians.
Zion I & The Grouch’s Heroes in the Healing of the Nation out now on iTunes.

Two more videos from Illmind’s “Going Behind The Curtain” video series promoting his recent instrumental album, Behind The Curtain, is now available on iTunes. This first video features Illmind speaking on the concept, artwork, theme, creation process of his instrumental project Behind The Curtain.

In part three of the video series, Illmind breaks down his track “Champions” instrument by instrument while in the studio. You heard this instrumental in my previous post on Emilio Rojas’ music video for his single of the same name. It is always very interesting to see how songs are created from the ground up, so take a gander at this video.

This past Tuesday, I was lucky enough to attend the last show of the Rhymesayers’ Family Tour, which coincidentally took place in my hometown, Boulder, Colorado. As well, I received a press pass to the event, which allowed me to take a massive amount of photos, which can be viewed in their entirety on RTV’s Flickr account.
First off, I should say that The Family Tour featured numerous artists from Rhymesayers Entertainment, including Sab, Grieves, Budo, Blueprint, and Atmosphere. Each and every artist had a dope set.
