Artist Spotlights

If you didn’t catch my two previous posts that included Samuel, then I highly recommend checking those posts out. The first post was his amazing cover of Drake’s “Find Your Love,” which you can find here and the second post was a remix by Hi-Deaf of the title track off his debut EP of the same name, which can be found here. He is on his way up in the music world as it is evident by Kanye West posting Samuel’s Drake cover on his blog and his current record deal with Startime/Columbia Records. I have collected all the music I could find on the web and have put it all in one post (all that is missing is the two tracks I have already posted and two tracks from the EP). Read a short bio about him from his MySpace and listen to and download his awesome music!

Born in New York, Samuel has been surrounded by music his entire life. His mother, whom he credits as his biggest influence, was a singer and performer in her own right. It wasn’t long before he followed in her footsteps, forming a string of bands throughout high school. Playing shows and doing home recordings, Samuel attracted some indie label attention but after being introduced to Ben “DJ BRoc” Ruttner, part of the production duo the Knocks, he decided to break off to pursue a solo career.

After a year and a half of writing, recording and performing, Samuel amassed a repertoire of catchy electro-pop bangers and, in the fall of 2008, his soulful voice, inspired lyrics, and dulcet hooks caught the ears of executives at Columbia Records who wasted no time in signing him to a record deal. With a record in the works for January 2010, the hype surrounding this up and coming talent has attracted major names from the hip-hop and pop world, all eager to work with him.

This track is his first single off his debut EP, I Heart NY. The EP is short but good nonetheless. Be sure to buy it! It is more of a teaser for what’s to come. Be on the look out for his debut album, Trains To Wanderland, which is set to drop this year.

“I remember when they (The Knocks) were first creating Blackout at the studio and I jokingly said, “I WANNA REMIX DAT.” and ‘remix dat’ I did. I switched up the beat a bit and messed around with some lo-fi instruments and TONS of reverb and delay. I wanted to showoff how the song is still %150 badass and also make it something that is altogether me. I think I accomplished it by selfishly adding a verse.” – Samuel

So, I decided to do a spotlight on Mt. Eden Dubstep tonight. Why you ask? Is it because they have a free EP coming out at the end of the month? Is it because they released a dope single a few days ago? No. It is because their music consistently rocks my f**king world and I think you should hear it (if you haven’t already). Harley Rayner and Jesse Cooper make up the group and they are based out of Auckland, New Zealand. First of all, check out their chill new single “Into the Light”! Then check out the great remixes and just for fun a DJ E mashup with them in it that is def one of my favorite songs of all time.

Doctor Rosen Rosen is our fourth Artist Spotlight and for a good reason. Many remixes are amateurish in their quality but everything the Doctor has released is what you would expect to be released on the radio. It is no wonder Lady Gaga tapped him to be featured on her Telephone: The Remixes EP. Once he finds a song he molds it into his darker pop-ier world (find out more about Doctor Rosen Rosen in our exclusive interview with him). Check below to enter his darker pop-ier world of music.

Download: Drake – Forever Feat. Kanye West, Lil Wayne & Eminem (Doctor Rosen Rosen Rx)

Download: Kanye West – Love Lockdown (Doctor Rosen Rosen Rx)

Download: Vistosos Bosses – Delirious Feat. Soulja Boy (Doctor Rosen Rosen Rx)

Download: Weezer – I Want You To (Doctor Rosen Rosen Rx)

More music from Doctor Rosen Rosen after the jump including songs from his Lily Allen remix album titled It’s Not Me, It’s Doctor Rosen Rosen.

From their website: “Live and Direct from the Honky Tonk of Electro. Behold the all time greatest Electro, Hip Hop Group from the 80′s. Three shit-faced extra terrestrials known amongst the elite simply as Donny, Preston and Holly. A couple of real gentlemen and one broad with a steady diet of cotton candy and flat soda pop to calm the nerves.” Yeah, I know. You are already in love. The group signed onto Universal Motown in October of 2008 and has toured with the likes of Kevin Rudolf and Lady Gaga. Their newest album (tentatively titled ‘Bella Vista Rocks The Arcade’) should be released soon with their first single being ‘Keep Up’ (music video for the song is above). Check them out.
