Album Reviews

After having a solid couple of days to listen to Kid Cudi’s new album, I am finally prepared to write about it. First of all, it truly is Man on the Moon II, because the style of the album is a perfect continuation of the original Man on the Moon. The tracks are all very much laid back, and filled with the same dreamy ambience that dominates most of Cudi’s previous work. You can expect the slow Cudi flow to roll smoothly over the various stellar (read cosmic) backdrops full of enough bass to blow your spaceship right out of the sky.

Looking in retrospect, it is a little ridiculous how much of this album has been circulating around the web since mid-June. Six of the songs from the album have actually already been featured on this site, albeit some not in finished form. The previously posted songs include: “Erase Me” and “Maniac”, “REVOFFEV”, “Mr. Rager” and “Wylin’ Cuz I’m Young”, and “Mojo So Dope”.

Overall, the album is a decrease in energy relative to Cudi’s earlier work. I don’t hear any songs on this album that can really pump you up… aside from “Erase Me”, which is still arguably mellow. My favorite tracks off the new album (that haven’t already been posted on at least 500 other sites) are “The End” and “These Worries”. Both of these tracks have great beats and sick flows. Chip Tha Ripper is also a plus for me. I love Chip, especially in his collaborations with Cudi.

Kid Cudi – These Worries (Feat. Mary J. Blige)

However, I would say that most of the hits on this album have already been released (see the above list). In my opinion, “Maniac” is really the star of the album. “Erase Me” takes a close second. I’m sure that many people would disagree with me on this too, so voice your opinion! I want to hear it! I’ll post “Maniac” and “Erase Me” for stream below.

Overall, the album is good, but it did not blow me away. It’s good music to chill to, and I will undoubtable use it for that purpose. But, I would have liked a little more definitive variety. I would have liked some more uplifting/banging content. I can only handle so much of the low-voiced, slow-flow Cudi. In his earlier days I feel like he really had a great deal of variety to his sound. For the die hard Cudi fans out there, this will most likely be a slam dunk. It is consistent with his now engrained style and it has an all-star feature line up.

On that note, I thought I would also toss in a few old songs from Cudi off of A Kid Named Cudi, one of Cudder’s old mixtapes. This bad boy dropped back in 2008. In my opinion this is Cudi at his finest. Whenever I bring it up or put it on, people around me are dumbfounded. I feel like not very many people have got to experience it. I’m pretty sure I don’t have to tell you all how long I’ve been waiting for this one. I have been tee-heeing and squirming like a 5 year old for a couple months in anticipation. Well I got it, did two backflips, and sat down to give it a listen…

First off, between the 7 tracks, don’t expect any continuity other than bassy deliciousness. What I’m saying is that there are a great variety of styles crammed into this EP. There are hard hitting, straight-up bangers like “Encore” and “Wildstyle Method”. But there are also some tracks that are influenced by rap and hip-hip, such as the remix of AmpLive’s “Hot Right Now” and “The 808 Track”. However, the chill wobbly tracks are my favorite. The two that I’m referring to are “Underwater” and “Falling”. As well, let’s not forget about “Fun With Synthesizers”, which is a whole ‘nother game in itself. Pretty cool track, with the term “track” being up for interpretation.

There are a great deal of featured artists on the album as well, including: 40 Love, Mighty High Coup, Paper Machete, and Tina Malia. My personal fav is Tina Malia. She breathes a crazy ethereal vibe into “Underwater” that is perfect.

Hmmm, my favorite drop you ask? Either 1:22 in “Underwater”, or “Encore” at :44. I’ll throw up my favs to stream, but you will have to head over to Bassnectar’s website to snag it (or stream the rest of the album). Don’t worry, its super cheap. Oh, and you can check out “Wildstyle Method”, the prerelease track, at our old post covering it.

In November 2009, exhausted by a small degree of industry rejection and playing in bands that didn’t artistically fulfill him, the 25-year old composer, multi-instrumentalist and lyricist, Kenton Dunson, went on several recording retreats. Occupying rooms at various hotels in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., these intervals of time were spent diligently writing and composing. This process continued throughout the entire winter and moved the artist to resign from a primary career to pursue the release of the 13-song solo project created over that span entitled The Kenton Dunson Progressions, which was recently released at a live show in Baltimore June 3rd, 2010 that will be followed by an east coast tour is being set for summer 2010. Kenton Dunson released The Kenton Dunson Progressions totally independently, meaning he composed (no samples, all originally played), wrote and recorded every track and even funded his own release.

The Kenton Dunson Progressions is one of those rare Hip Hop albums that can be truly considered art. Similar to Foreign Exchanges’ Connected, the album dips through soulful beats and rhythms as Kenton Dunson lays intelligent and meaningful lyrics whether he is singing or rapping. In fact, I believe I have not heard an album like this since Foreign Exchanges’ Connected, an album that is widely regarded as a classic alternative Hip Hop album. I am confident that Kenton Dunson’s album will follow the same path as long as his album reaches the same fan base as Foreign Exchange.

The album begins with the intro track titled “Animals Of Habit” where Kenton Dunson in spoken word states “Paint your own picture, Give us an original,” which Kenton Dunson from the very beginning does not fail to do. One track I would like to highlight is titled “Frenzy,” which is composed of poetic lyrics describing the sensation of when a song “is a profound offering” as if “oxygen hits” (quotations are from the song). It is a shorter song but, just as is the whole album, it is lyrically and musically qualified. Listen and download this track below.

If you haven’t heard of The Constellations, you will in only a matter time (how about now?). Their debut album Southern Gothic has just been re-released on June 22nd. I wish I have heard of them before now but I doubt I am the only one (especially since their music video only has 13k views at the moment). According to their website, the album is all about what happens in their stomping grounds, Atlanta, GA, from 2am until noon. I have never been to Atlanta (that’s a lie, I have been to the airport there) but according to them A-Town can get awfully bizarre in the early hours of the morning. The album took two years to make and was produced by Ben H. Allen (producer of Animal Collective & Gnarls Barkley), so you know it will be good and let me tell you, it is. Did I mention Cee-Lo (of Gnarls Barkley) and Asher Roth make features on this album? I think I have your attention now.

I won’t discuss their single “Setback” since I want to discuss four other songs on the album but you can view the music video for it on YouTube (the people at EMI Music are either douche bags or retards because they disabled the ability to embed the video. Thanks for making it tough to promote your artists, dicks). You can also get a free download of the song if you sign up for their mailing list here. The song should be getting airplay in the near future but I digress.. The first song that I want to feature is the second track on the album titled “Perfect Day.” The song is real catchy with an upbeat melody and nicely placed horns in the chorus. I can picture myself strutting around the city with this in my headphones on repeat.. well not as much as the next songs I am about to feature, so be sure to keep reading.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
