Now that I got that out of the way… WTF Lil B! No warning! I mean really?!
For those of you that don’t know, Lil B dropped this elusive album with no warning whatsoever in the wee hours of last night. Whatev B, we’re cool because your album is absolutely epic. It’s not epic in a banger, or mainstream production sort of way, but a deeper and really more beautiful sort of way. Of course, if you are already a Lil B fan, you probably expected that. The guy is so very versatile, and truthfully, so very real. In my opinion, a great deal of makes this album so wonderful (sound aside) is the meaning inherent in nearly every track.
That being said, Lil B really spills his guts all over every gem nestled in this 12-track wonder. Not only does he share a lot about himself, but he shares a lot about his perception of the world, which I found valuable. I’m tired of being assaulted by rappers yelling about their bank accounts and disregard for anything other than the thickness of their wallet. While I totally have tons of that music (because lets admit it – it’s party music), its replay value is directly correlated to to how many handles I can afford; which is certainly not the case here.
I’m not the most knowledgable B fan, I really only started listening to him with the release of the new tracks from The Pack in late 2010, but I am wholeheartedly behind the guy. Cheers to artists who care more about the integrity of their messages and persona than how many radio stations feature their solo albums.
Here’s my fav tracks, with “Game” taking the #1 spot:
Play-N-Skillz might be one of the most famous artists you never heard of. This Grammy award winning duo is stepping out from behind the boards to make their own music. You have heard their production on Chamillionaire’s “Ridin’” as well as Lil Wayne’s “Got Money,” so you know their production is top notch. Their song writing ability also just so happens to have Top 40 written all over it.
Take “She Goes On” for example, a reinterpolation of Billy Joel’s “Uptown.” This urban rendition of the song is one of the more catchier songs I’ve heard lately. You can never go wrong remaking a classic. “She Goes On” is the second cut off their upcoming Fireworks project dropping July 4th, which is sure to be dope.
“Survivor” is another cut off their upcoming project. With electronic and pop elements, this song is another heater off their upcoming project. The production is top notch as to be expected and the chorus is way chill. This is a nice summer time track perfect for a sunny day.
Bassnectar has blessed this sacred Wednesday with a new track. This, of course, comes in anticipation of Divergent Spectrum, Lorin’s newest creation, which is slated for release on August 2nd. The track is a Frankenstein of different styles, and as filthy as you would expect.
As with most Bassnectar singles, this track is available as a free download through Bassnectar’s widget below, so snag it now.

Oh, as well, check out their download page for a few exclusive previews of other new tracks from the album.
Here’s my electro fix for the day. The best part: Kaskade is giving it away for free. He’s been giving away a free track each week for a bit now via Twitter, because, well, he’s socially progressive and f***ing wonderful. Equally wonderful: Robyn.
I’m honestly not the most well-versed listener when it comes to Dom Kennedy, but when I saw that Asher Roth was featured on this track from his freshly released album titled II: From The Westside With Love, I had to give it a listen.
Lately, I’ve really reignited my love for Asher Roth, especially after his recent release, “Summertime”. Much like in “Summertime”, Roth’s flow is fast and flawless on this track. As well, the bare-bones beat laid out by Chuck Inglish compliments the song, and all three emcees play to it well.
If you dug the teaser of 3OH!3′s “Robot,” you will love the full thing especially once 3:00 hits. In comparison to the past stuff though, this is not their best. Seems more like a street single than anything.
So, I was trying out this new service called Turntable that if I don’t say is super addictive. This new interactive music platform is still in beta but the gist of it is that it is a large chat room where you can play music of your choosing to an audience. I am currently chilling in a room that Cory of SilenceNoGood.net and I created called KnowGood Hip-Hop, so come and join us! I have also created RemixTheVideo room that I may be in and out of. Below is one gem I discover using Turntable.

I don’t even remember where I found this track… but I know I’ve been listening to it for what feels like about 2 weeks… Daniel Zavaro (AKA Dirty D) whipped it up using Mac Miller’s freestyle, “Pittsburg Kidz Get The Biz”. I’m not sure why, but it seems like a lot of people missed it, so grab it now.
As an added bonus, here is a random, funky-ass song I’ve been bumping and neglecting to post for quite some time now. Hats off to Psymbionic for it, who’s also planning to drop an EP soon which will surely be magnificent.
Oh my god. Oh my god, oh my god. Just listen to this. All the way through, very, very, loud.
It’s great to hear a remix of an Adele song that isn’t “Rolling In The Deep”, especially when it’s this fantastic. The German-born Thomas Gold takes Adele’s gorgeous song to phenomenal electronic heights in what certainly is in contention for my favorite track of 2011 thus far. Listen, love, and buy.
To think that it was almost a year ago that I reviewed Kenton Dunson’s first solo album The Kenton Dunson Progressions is crazy to me. He has grown so much as an artist and truly has the potential to be one of the break out stars this year in the music industry. After listening through his latest release, Creative Destruction 2, I think that is almost guaranteed to be the case. He is light-years ahead of most artists when it comes to song writing, production and lyricism. He is the definition of a triple threat.
If you are unfamiliar with Kenton, this album will be a treat for you. There is nothing on this album that you can’t like. In fact, I am having a hard time deciding which songs is my favorite of the whole thing. I can tell you one thing, the Syl Johnson sampled song “Mine Again” is my new summer jam. Definitely grab yourself a copy of this album and remember, this is just the beginning. Expect to be hearing a lot more about Kenton in the near future.
