Doctor Rosen Rosen Interview With RemixTheVideo

RemixTheVideo recently had the opportunity to send some questions over to producer and remixer Doctor Rosen Rosen. We have created two video remixes to date from some of the work the Doctor has done including his remix of Weezer’s “I Want You To” and his remix of Drake’s “Forever”. We also featured his remix of Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” that was featured on her Telephone: The Remixes EP. The Doctor has an uncanny ability to recreate songs in a way that alters the mood of the song, which you will be able to see on our Artist Spotlight on Doctor Rosen Rosen. Be sure to check out the Doctor’s website at DoctorRosenRosen.com.
Full interview after the jump.
You remixed Lily Allen’s entire ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You’ album and attempted to get your remixed version in her hands. Did you ever get in contact with Lily? If so, what were her thoughts on it?
I did get some positive feedback from her camp, but unfortunately, I never heard anything from Lily directly. If you talk to her… tell her to call me!
How do you decide what tracks to remix? Also, what is the next remix we can expect from you?
The songs I like to remix the most are the ones I think I can take to a new place and put my stamp on. Lately, I’ve had a lot of fun remixing indie-artists like Yeasayer and Tegan & Sara – I love the challenge of taking these artist’s songs into my dark pop-ier world. I’m currently working on a remix for an amazing NYC artist name Madison. I’m also going to put out a previously unreleased remix I did for Blue Roses this summer.
In what direction do you see your music career heading? Where do you want to be in ten years besides eating out at In N Out Burger with Mariah Carey?
My goal has always been to produce and write pop songs for other artists. My plan for the next 10 year is to really focus on that goal and also score a film or two.
You have released two singles and a 3 song EP. Can we expect a full LP from you in the future? If so, will it be all instrumentals or will artists feature vocals on it?
There will definitely be a Doctor Rosen Rosen LP in the future. My dream is to to do an album that features a bunch of my favorite female vocalists – Fiona Apple, Gwen Stefani, Mariah Carey, Lily Allen, Bjork, Janet Jackson and more.
I understand that you were part of a band called The Handsome Public where you split the vocals with a friend. Do you see yourself again laying vocals on the tracks you produce?
I’ve been doing a lot of songwriting lately which has forced me to start singing again on demos. I’ve always been self-conscious about my voice, but I’m starting to get more confident with it. I just did a song with Jessie Malakouti where I sing backgrounds on the hook. As far as a Doctor Rosen Rosen singing album… not sure if that will ever happen.
One would assume that after your remix of Lada GaGa’s ‘Telephone’ was featured on her single release that record labels would be requesting
original production from you. Have you been reached out to by record labels to produce original songs for their artists? If so, can we expect to see the tracks released in the near future?
My remix work has totally opened up a bunch of doors at the labels. In the past 6 months I’ve worked working with artists on Interscope, Universal, Warner, and Jive. I have a song coming out in a couple month’s for an artist named Kay, that I’m especially excited about – it will be my first song that I produced and co-wrote for another artist to be properly released. There is going to be a crazy video for the song as well as remixes by some really heavy hitters.
From someone who has been involved in the music scene for awhile now, what words of advice can you give to the many aspiring producers and DJs in the world?
The best advice I can give is: give your music away for FREE to as many people as possible. I think of the internet as one huge radio station. All of the different blogs/sites are essentially channels that people are “turning their dial” to. If you make dubstep music, send your music to the dubstep “channels” and tell them it is OK to give your tracks away. The more people that hear your music – the more fans you will attract – the more opportunities will come your way. Most important… don’t give up. Everyone’s path to success is different, but there is one common thing all of the successful people share – they never gave up.
Do you have any last words to RemixTheVideo’s visitors?
If anyone out there knows Mariah Carey – tell her to call Doctor Rosen Rosen ASAP. Thanks!
